Algae covers a large family of different microorganisms that are capable of harvesting light energy from the sun to create carbohydrates. You could see them where there is water: in the pond, in the lakes, in the oceans, or even in your outdoor water fountains. These blue green colored creatures can endure different ranges of temperatures, acidity, turbidity and carbon dioxide concentrations. This means to say that they could thrive easily over time.
While a part of the natural eco-system, this doesn't mean that you can keep them. In fact, most forms of algae are actually toxic; the rampant growth of these organisms can lead into a large production of toxins, especially on water. When it comes to your fountain, having it filled with a skin of algae buildup will not only threaten the quality of water that passes through the pump, but it will also cause problems in the air which you and your family breathes. This is something you would not want. And thankfully, there are ways on how to keep algae out of your fountain and prevent them from occurring easily.
How to keep water fountain from turning green
First, you must clean your outdoor water feature. It should be cleansed at least every couple of months, depending on the size. Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential for fountain algae control and to ensure that your fountain remains functional and aesthetically pleasing. What you want is to keep the water clear and the pump clean from any buildups. Not only does algae create an unsightly appearance over your water feature, but this may also cause some damage in your pump and later on, might even ruin your fountain. Take the basic steps in cleaning your water feature: turn it off, remove the parts, empty the water and clean your fountain inside out. Don't forget to clean the fountain pump as well!

While these solutions offer ways to cleanse the water and prevent algae from building up too quickly, you can't be 100% that these tiny organisms won't come back. However, you can take things further and make it harder for them to invade your beloved water fountain.
- Give your outdoor fountain a thorough cleaning every 1 to 3 months, depending on your fountain’s size. Cleaning your fountain prevents nutrients from the water and waste materials from accumulating on its surfaces. Water, a mild soap, and a non-abrasive sponge should be all that it is required to give your fountain a thorough cleaning. The fountain pump will need to be removed and placed in a bucket of warm water to soak (which loosens debris) before being scrubbed itself.
- Place your outdoor water fountain in the shade – away from direct sunlight. When nutrients in the water are exposed to direct sunlight, algae growth occurs. Nutrients can be found in water naturally. They usually result fish waste, plant waste, or other types of debris. By placing your fountain in a shady location, you can reduce the chances that algae will form and grow.
- Fill your outdoor fountain only with fresh water. If you have a small to medium sized outdoor fountain, try filling it with distilled water only. This will give it a distinct advantage in the water against algae. Because the water has been distilled, it has already had its impurities and debris removed. This will assist in preventing algae from forming. For logistical and financial reasons, using distilled water in larger fountains is not always practical, but if you would prefer to use distilled water in a larger fountain, then you are encouraged to do so.
